Unit Description

Students will improve their communication skills by talking about what the date and the month is each day. We will learn about weather for each day and see what would be comfortable to wear depending on the weather. Students will also learn about what is coming up on the calendar and how they are going to prepare for it. They will build their social skills by interacting with the group and being involved in group discussions.

Lesson Description for Day

We will go through a powerpoint as our morning discussion. We will talk about the date, the weather, what we are comfortable wearing, what we have planned for the weekend etc.

After our morning discussion, (if we have time) we will go to n2y.com and read the article together about pizza as a class. We will take turns reading and do the games that go along with it.If any of the students chose to start misbehaving, try to engage them more! Ask them questions, ask them to read to the class, have them ask questions.

State Standards

Students will build social skills with the morning discussion and they will learn about the weather, the date, schedules and holidays.

Lesson Goals:

Each Student should be able to answer:

 -What is the date today?

-What is the weather like today?

-Tell about your weekend.

-Tell about one of your meals this weekend.

-What people did you see over the weekend?

Methods

Anticipatory Set:

-Have the chairs in a circle for morning discussion.

-Have the weather forecast for the day on the board

Introduce and Model New Knowledge:

Introduce what holiday is coming up (Thanksgiving) and ask the students what they are planning to do for this.

Provide Guided Practice:

We will gather in a circle and read an article on n2y.com about pizza. We will take turns reading it and do the games that come along with it.

Provide Independent Practice:

There won't be a lot of independent practice. The students will be engaged in discussion most of the time.

Wrap-Up

We will wrap up by going around the room and saying what our goal is for today and how we are going to accomplish that.

Assessment

Formative/Ongoing Assessment:

Students will answer questions and engage in discussion during the lesson, they will answer questions like what did you do last night? what is the weather like today? or what are you doing this weekend? etc.

This will act as their formative assessment as they will be practicing speaking 1-on-1, with a group and with teachers.

Summative/End Of Lesson Assessment:

At the end of each quarter, they will be assessed on how well their communication skills have improved, any new words they have acquired and how much more they talk.

Anticipatory Set

Have whiteboards on each desk when the students arrive into the room. Start off the lesson with a few warm up problems to do on their whiteboards.

Introduce and Model New Knowledge

1. Start with 5 warm-up problems on simple one-step equations solving. If the students struggle with this warm-up, review it.

2. You will give a handout to each student and explain the notes provided on the answer key of the handout.

3. We will do 5 practice problems as a class and then see if they understand it.--More practice problems are attached if needed.

4. Start the "starburst activity" directions are attached.

Provide Guided Practice

Students will take notes on my lecture on the Pythagorean theorem and do practice problems that I will guide them through.

Students will all participate in a kahoot game to provide extra guided practice. If there is a lot of people that get a certain question wrong then we will go through that problem as a class.

Provide Independent Practice

Homework time for students to ask questions. Homework handout is attached and will be due for the next class period

Wrap-Up

Review what we learned by playing a Kahoot!
